Obituary of Kathryn N. Obal

Kathryn N. Obal, 87, passed away on Friday April 7, 2023 at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro, NJ.  Kathryn was born and raised in Sayreville, NJ. She and her husband resided in Princeton, NJ, for over 50 years before moving to Monroe Township, NJ in 2014.

Kathryn was a loving homemaker, nurturing her children and grandchildren with love and guidance her whole life. 

She also contributed in the family business, Obal Garden Market, where she was the bookkeeper and attended payroll.

Kathryn enjoyed and celebrated all holidays and birthdays, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, painting, cooking soups and sauces and loved flowers especially her orchids.

She was a past member of the Lioness Club of Princeton.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her mother and father, Alexandria Szumowski and Joseph Nicewicz ,  brothers Stanley and Joe Nicewicz and her three sisters, Helen Garvin, Rose Vigilante, and Ann Keenan.

Kathryn is survived by her loving husband of sixty-six years, Walter J. Obal of Monroe Township, NJ, her two sons, Walter J. Obal and his wife Louise of Plainsboro, NJ, Thomas W. Obal of Monroe Township, NJ, her daughter, Debra Bertone and her husband Kevin of Groveville, NJ, and her grandchildren, Jason Bertone of Denver CO, Juliann Bertone and her husband Sam Hitchcock,of Taos NM. Brother in law Joe Obal and his wife Joan of Sayreville, NJ.

Also surviving are many extended family members, The Bertone's, Karen, Guy, Mark, Carol, Susan, Maryanne and Tim.  Many loved nieces and nephews, The Garvin's, Walter, Matt, Kathy , Patti  and Mark, the Vigilante's, Jimmy and Patti, the Niecewicz's Robert and John, Tim Keenan, the Obal's Anthony and Kenneth, the Geene's Garrett and Brandon and along with many loving and supportive friends and neighbors.   

There will be a gathering from 10:00am to 10:30am on Monday April 17, 2023 at Nativity of Our Lord RC Church, 185 Applegarth Road, Monroe Township, NJ 08831. A funeral liturgy will begin at the conclusion of the gathering at 10:30am at church.  Interment will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka RC Church Parish Cemetery, Pulaski Ave, Sayreville, NJ 08872.

In lieu of flowers and for those who desire, memorial donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice in Kathryn's name.
