I will speak personally: I loved my Uncle Anthony, and he loved me. We spoke often over the years and always ended our conversations telling the other “I love you.” He was a father to me and my brother, taking us on rides, to the beach, to the World’s Fair in 1964, or just out with him to gas up the car. Although I was terrible in sports he surprised me with a baseball glove I had forever prayed for, and showed me how to condition the leather, how to configure it with a baseball. He told me to leave it like that, wrapped with the ball inside and leave it alone for a number of days, which I found impossible to do. I was enamored with the Beatles and he bought a record player and an album, and over time 2 more records which I played over and over. I still brush my shoes Sundays with the brush he gave me marked U.S.M.C., and in the cold I wear a coat, well worn now, that he gave me while I myself was enlisted. In these moments I am given to moments of reflection and sentiment.
My uncle was a model of kindness, a good man. On the one occasion he spoke severely to me correcting my insubordination to my mother I broke down in tears as he above all was the one person I most wanted to never let down.
Both my uncles gave life order and stability. My sense of personal security and stability was broken by abuse I endured by a stepfather. I dropped out of school and, because of fear often slept in stairwells and in vacant stores. I was lost. One night – and I shared this with my uncle years later that he might know his impact in my life - I was sixteen and going nowhere, acting terribly to workers at a pizzeria in the Bronx – my uncle miraculously showed up. He had been driving around looking for me. His kind behavior and manner of speaking with those working broke through my disorientation and it came to me very consciously – I mean to say it came forcefully to my conscious awareness – that I wanted somehow to be like him, and not the person I was.
That was in 1972, and I have had to struggle with my personality throughout my life, but that aspiration to be such a man as my uncle, despite so much of my internal discord, was never fully extinguished. I never quite got there, Uncle Anthony, but God helped me and continues to help me with you as a model I often come back to. God be gracious to your soul, my uncle.

Tony, Nick Petkovich and I were the three musketeers while stationed at Ft. Campbell in the 1950s. We owned a 1946 Cadillac that gave us many hours of fun and laughter. Nick passed three years ago, so I remain the last musketeer. My heart goes out to Mattie and the family. Fair winds and following seas, Tony.
