Yesterday I received a phone call from Mr. Romano's son, Jerry. one of the sons of a great man in the lives of so many former students, myself included. Vincent Romano passed away at the age of 92. “Vinnie” as he wanted us to call him, when we became friends later in life, had been our 6th grade teacher in PS 153, in Brooklyn, NY. He was our first male teacher and he was quite a man. He was a role model for me and for many, many others. I and a close group of my friends from that 6th grade class had the pleasure of seeing him occasionally, but not often enough in the 60+ years since he had been our teacher. Several of us, his former students from the second class that he had ever taught were welcomed into his and Nancy's homes, both on Long Island and then later in New Jersey. Four of us from that class, Eddie Ingerman. Bobby Rothchild, David Maley and myself (Larry Bloom was in Florida and was not able to join us) were very proud that we had been asked to join Vinnie, his friends and his family when they celebrated his 90th birthday just 3 years ago. Seeing our Vinnie, put tears in our eyes and in his. It was a happy time and a deserved celebration for a great man who will be greatly missed by so many. Marc Kubit

Mr. Romano was my first male teacher, and a strong role model for me. I was in his sixth grade class at PS 153. I, and some of my classmates, have remained in touch with him ever since. He was a special teacher and person. We were invited to share in his 90th birthday celebration. His class, and way of making learning interesting and fun is a memory that will always be with me. He will be missed.

Mr. Romano, Vinnie, was a unique individual, extraordinary teacher, cherished friend. More important that teaching us the curriculum he taught us how to live, think for ourselves, be better people. Imagine if there were only more like him in the world today . . .
