Obituary of Herbert H. Gilsenberg

Herbert Gilsenberg died on Monday, June 20, 2022 at his home in Concordia, Monroe Twp.  He was 93 years old.  Mr. Gilsenberg was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.  He later lived in Woodbridge Twp. for many years before moving to Concordia, Monroe Twp.  He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.  He worked for St. Johnsbury Trucking Company for almost 40 years.  Following his retirement from the trucking industry in 1991, he began to actively volunteer in various capacities.  He was recruited to be the Director of Consumer Affairs for Woodbridge Twp.  He also served as the Program Coordinator for the Annual Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration and was the former commissioner for the NJ Holocaust Education Commission.  Later, Herbert was appointed as the Director of Special Community Events for NJ and was a past Commissioner of the NJ Hall of Fame Commission.  He was a past Service Officer for the American Legion Post 522, Monroe Twp.  He retired from his active volunteer efforts in 2005.

He was predeceased by his wife, Harriet (Levine) Gilsenberg, his domestic partner, Judy Goldberg, and his daughter, Laurie Grill.

He is survived by three step-children, Lisa Aiken and her husband Kurt, Reed Goldberg and his wife Lisa, and Randy Cooper and her husband Robert, his dear friend, Cindy Stark, his grandson, Marc Grill and his wife Tara, two great-grandsons, Landon and Ryan, nine step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

Gathering of friends and family will be from 10:00am to 11:00am on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. 205 Rhode Hall Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831, 732-521-0555.  A funeral service will be 11:00am at the funeral home followed by Interment in Beth Israel Cemetery, Rt. 1 North, Woodbridge Twp., NJ.
