Obituary of Guillermo Valdes-Gutierrez

Please share a memory of Guillermo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Guillermo Valdes Gutierrez, age 80, passed away on March 25, 2022. He was predeceased by his mother Manuela, and his Father Guillermo.

Guillermo, referred to by his friends and family as Willie, was born on July 1941 in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and was the eldest of four children. At the age of five Willie, his sister Sylvia and brother Frank moved to New York City with their mother Manuela, where their youngest brother Robert was born. He then resided in the Bronx, Long Island, the Bronx again, and finally in New Jersey.

Willie served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963 as an airplane technician and always loved planes. He enjoyed viewing flyovers and demonstrations whenever and wherever possible throughout his life. After his service in the armed forces, he worked in the telephone industry at Ma Bell and then AT&T from 1964 to 1992. His last occupation was with ADP, a company that provides human resources management software and services until his retirement in 2007.

Willie was an avid fan of the doo-wop music from his era, Jazz from many eras, and the Latin music styles such as salsa, and mambo. He maintained an extensive collection of LPs which were later digitized to his first iPod and computer music libraries, but the LPs still remained.

Willie very much enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, fishing, and white water rafting. He also played on a softball team in the 1980s.

Willie was extremely handy and well-versed in many aspects of carpentry, construction, electrical, and plumbing. He performed many renovations on his own homes, especially for his children, and for others. Everyone who knew Willie also knew of his love of tools - he had so many and often multiple sets! He was always on the hunt for the better and the more efficient tool, and he always carried a Swiss army pocket knife multi-tool in case of emergencies.

Willie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His family was his pride and joy and the most important thing in his life.

He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-four years; Tamara Valdes, his four children; Christine Valdes, Alex Valdes and his wife Natalia Valdes, Lisa Marquez and her husband Ricardo Marquez, Dante Velasquez. His four grandchildren; Briana Valdes, Mia Valdes, Larson Marquez, and Lara Marquez, and his great-granddaughter Rose. His three siblings; Sylvia Miranda, Francisco Valdes and his wife Ann Valdes, Robert Valdes and his wife Rene Valdes, his five nibblings; Stephanie Pries and her husband Michael Pries, Laura Galvin and her husband Tony Galvin, Raven Kenworthy and her husband Dan Kenworthy, Robert Valdes and his wife Rebecca Valdes, Tim Valdes.
