Obituary of Marian S Welsh
On Sunday, August 8th, 2021, Marian Welsh, aged 94, and surrounded by her 4 children, passed away at her home in Monroe, N.J. after a short illness.
Marian was born November 16th, 1926, in Union City, New Jersey to Heinrich and Sophie Ochs. She resided in Union City during her youth and teen years and began a successful career in the advertising industry in New York City, before ultimately being swept off her feet by a tall and gangly young man named George Welsh, whom she met while working at her father’s bar.
Marian and George were married in May of 1956, and between 1958 and 1965 they brought 4 children into this world: Kathleen, Carol, Kevin and Christine.
In the early 1960’s the Welsh’s moved to Buffalo, New York, but eventually returned to New Jersey where Marian would live the rest of her life. Her advertising career was over, but she plunged into the equally challenging and rewarding career of wife, mother and ultimately, grandmother and great-grandmother with equal parts determination and passion. There was nothing she would not do for her family. In addition to caring for her husband and 4 children not to mention various cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters, she was a Girl Scout Leader, a Cub Scout Leader, and when time allowed worked the occasional odd job at W.T. Grants in the record shop, and behind the counter at Thrift Drugs as well.
After George retired, they vacationed and traveled the world, but Marian was most happy when she was at home and surrounded by her ever-growing family. She wrote a note to her 4 children shortly before she died, and although she commented on her sadness at losing her husband George just after his retirement in 1996, she still remarked,
“I never missed anything-and just look at the joy I found- Love is the key…” Truly beautiful words from a beautiful soul who will be mourned and missed by many for a long time.
Marian was preceded in death in 1996 by her loving husband, George as well as her two brothers, Henry and George. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Welsh, daughter Carol Onksen and husband Bill, son Kevin Welsh and wife Beth, and daughter Christine Skalski and husband Chet. In addition, she is survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
