Obituary of Virginia C. Fokas

Please share a memory of Virginia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Virginia C. Fokas, 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Monroe Township on Sunday, May 16th, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.

Virginia was born on September 22, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Salvatore and Rose (nee Miele) Colonna. She was a graduate of New Utrecht High School and after graduation worked for the Bell Telephone Company. In 1962, she met and married Peter Fokas. She and Peter moved to Staten Island in 1967 where they resided for 41 years before moving to Monroe Twp. in 2008.

Virginia worked for the New York Dept. of Corrections at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility for over 35 years until her retirement in 2010. She enjoyed working and always recalled the fond memories and many friends she met there.

Virginia was pre-deceased by her brothers, Rosario and Vincent Colonna.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Peter Fokas; daughters Katherine Fokas of Monroe Twp. and Christine and her husband, John Monaco, also of Monroe Twp. and their two sons, John Peter and Michael Monaco, who lovingly referred to her as “Grandma V.”  She is also survived by two nieces, Jackie Colonna and Rosemary Bracco and their families, all who loved her very much.

For those who knew Virginia, know she was a die-hard Yankee fan who never missed a game. Whether her grandsons were playing baseball, basketball or soccer, she was always there to watch and they were truly her biggest joy. She enjoyed taking frequent trips to Atlantic City with her husband and had fond memories of visiting Greece, his homeland. She loved to draw and paint and loved animals. She was a kind, sincere person who accepted everyone as is and never judged a book by its cover. She was not flashy or fancy but her sparkle was brighter than any diamond. To know her was to love her, wacky as she was, she was just Virginia. We will all miss her more than words can ever express.
