Obituary of K-9 Joy

K-9 Joy's end of watch came on February 26, 2021.

All of us have mourned the loss of family and friends at some point in our lives.  Many of us have mourned the loss of a precious pet through the years…In both cases, overwhelming feelings of sadness and grief consume us.

But only a select few ever have the opportunity to work alongside an animal every day that is entrusted with so much…it is not boisterous or swagger… bragging or gloat…it is a gift …an honor and privilege to be responsible for another that asks so little of us in return for their service…

For those that knew her from afar, she was the loud and disruptive one of the group…always barking, establishing her territory….a look that would make many second guess their approach…Many would even say that she knew exactly when to speak on the radio…

For those that knew her well, she commanded your attention.  Beneath the seemingly harsh exterior was a gentle soul that wanted nothing more than your love and affection …

For those that knew her best, she was the loving companion, a member of the family…a fixture at your bedside when you woke in the morning, your shadow around the house…

She came from the Seeing Eye in Morristown and was trained by an extraordinary group of trainers and served the department and county for more than 5 years.  Throughout countless courthouse sweeps, suspicious package calls and dignitary details, she worked alongside a special group of handlers and their K9 partners both within and outside the walls of the department. 

Always available at a moment’s notice, whether for a bomb threat or kindergarten demonstration, she illustrated how important these animals are not only for our safety and well-being, but also for the education of our youth…

A partner like no other … gone much too soon with so much more to give…

K-9 Prayer

I will lay down my life for you and expect nothing in return.  I protect all officers with my life, and would gladly take a bullet in their place.  I am sent in to find lost children and fugitives on the run.  I find drugs and weapons and even bombs.  I am the first sent in and often the last to leave.  I am the nose and ears of the officers.  I protect and serve them.  I would die for any and all officer.  I only ask for your love and care.

A memorial gathering will take place from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on Sunday March 7, 2021 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc., 205 Rhode Hall Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831, 732-521-0555.  Last call honors will take place at 2:00pm at the funeral home.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions placed on gatherings and activities, all current guidelines are to be observed during memorials, including the use of face coverings and social distancing.
