When I entered Mooseheart as a young 7th grader James was my roommate, he was quite and very kind and great when it came to sports. I’m not that far behind you buddy, so rather than saying goodbye I’ll just say I’ll see you when I get there.

James was a treasured classmate, close friend, and a dear person. He was devoted to Rose, and loved and admired by everyone. He will be sadly missed. Our only consolation is that he is in heaven with his parents and two brothers. Ray and I loved and admired him! Sincerely, Ray and Marcie Boulay.

To the extended Upton family - we are praying for all of you and asking for God's special blessings during this difficult time.
I am still in such shock - I just can't imagine not seeing Facebook messages from James - his photo memories, jokes, and words of wisdom. He was such a genuinely good person - Always finding a special way to brighten the day for someone with his special postings.
James had a way of bringing the grads together to enjoy the good memories - and leaving the bad memories where they belong - in the past. I'm very grateful for the connections he helped us enjoy at our reunion. He worked very hard to make the class reunions memorable for all. He was such a genuinely caring soul. God has a special angel - but we thank Him for sharing James with us. Maureen Moon Weisser - Mooseheart Grad 1968

Rose, please let the many condolences from all over the world sustain you during this time of grief. My brother was such a kind and caring person. I am so thankful you two were able to get to California for my daughter’s wedding. We shared good laughs and chats then and he would want us to continue in the years to come. Rose, we love you sister and are here for you each and every day. Rest peacefully brother and give those angels a break once in awhile. Gratefulness and love, your sister MP

Dearest Rose and Upton Family, Words cannot express our heartfelt sorrow to hear of the passing of our Brother and friend James. As my wife Sherry and I are 1980 Mooseheart alums we shared a closeness with James on many levels. We were blessed to have James on the Mooseheart Alumni Association Board and there we were able to get to know the real man. James was a caring, intelligent and funny guy who would light up any email, text, phone call or a face to face visit. Time spent with James was always a true blessing. His wit was second to none. He was the Alumni Association's historian. His ability to dig into archives and find gems of Mooseheart's history was amazing. The loss of James is a horrible reality of how fragile life can be. He will be deeply missed though his spirit and endless memories will live in our hearts for eternity. Sherry and I share our deepest condolences for Rose and his entire family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. May our Lord hold you brother James in his warm embrace and keep you safe in the Heavens. We will miss you and will see you on the other side someday.
With Sorrow and Warmest Regards,
Mark and Sherry LaRosa

Hi Rose,
I remember meeting you and James at your house in Leesburg for Thanksgiving. You both welcomed us and made us feel like family. James was kind and jovial. I was struck by his humor and wit. He told great stories and that was one of the most memorable Thanksgiving we’ve ever had. I hope as you read these memories it will help you in your grieving process. Know that people are thinking of you and your family.

Those Upton boys were legendary on the influence they had on campus at Moosehead.
Their family , the boys were held in the highest regard. Their mother was a wonderful person as as well. I have such positive memories of Mary Patrice as well. James with all his communications eased the time I had there. I still remember Mr Adkins saying El Cajohon California when the Upton were in attendance when later in learned it it was El Cahown in pronunciation.
I will never forget James and his dedication to all alumni who he referred to brothers and sisters. This impacted me.
We have lost a giant among men.
My sincere condolences to his family and to his wife Rose.
You all mean a lot to me and are people who I will never forget

My heart felt condolences go out to Aunt Rose, to all the Upton clan, and to all other family and friends whom Uncle James touched. Uncle James was and always will be the laughter in the room. I know he is looking down wondering who has good joke he hasn’t heard. Not to worry, I’ve got your back Uncle James. When the tears subside, someday in the future, the laughter will return again. Only this time instead of you delivering it directly, it will be stories of remembrance of you and for you. The laughter will live on thru you always.
P. S. Thanks for teaching me how to play cards and gamble. There’s just some things a kid never forgets. Rest In Peace.

I had never met James in person. I was delighted to know him first, through the Mooseheart Alumni site on Facebook, then as general friends on Facebook. Formerly, long ago, though not at James' time there, I taught at the high school, went back to school for a graduate degree, and ended up becoming the Director of Student Services at Mooseheart (total 11 years). I joined the alumni group in order to get in touch again with so many of my dear students (1984-95). As a bonus, I had the honor of meeting many alumni, young and older. I was so honored to be connected with James. His creativity online was amazing and his sense of humor fueled my soul for the last 10 years since I had joined FB. I called him "JaJaJa James" when he made me groan, or giggle or laugh out loud! Both my husband and I already miss him and his entertaining personality.
Rose, I send you blessings and prayers for your strength as you deal with the loss of your dear husband. I am so sad with you and ask Almighty God to soothe your soul. May James eternally rest in the peace, love, and joy of the Lord for his life well-lived, especially for giving joy to so many.

James Upton, was my brother, and for this I will always be thankful. He had a gift, which was to handle every situation, be it planned or unplanned, minor or major, immediate or deferred, with timely humor well received by those within ear shot. Early in his adult life, knowing where “the limit or borderline” was, was often a challenge…. but always funny! Then he met his “Wonderful Rose”, who quickly showed James the boundaries. Not that James always adhered, of course, as James had a little “maverick” in him, but he always knew between his mother, Doris, and Rose… that a lecture was soon to occur if he stepped over the line! I can hear him now, “Yes ma'ma, yes ma'ma, I will never do it again…. followed with a respectful but humorous “in bounds” retort. What never needed to be “nipped in the bud” was James heart of gold and willingness to help others in need. James could never have been a priest, as his “maverick streak” was a disqualifier, but in terms of deeds, I never met a priest or godly person that exceeded his caring and helpfulness to those in need. The Upton family has lost a brother, the Mooseheart family has lost a champion and the collective recipients whom James touched through his kind and thoughtful actions has lost an earthly friend. The silver lining, for all of us, for eternity, are the fond memories and blueprint that he left us, to remember “kindness and a humorous sly wink” is all that is necessary to help others in need. Rest in Peace James, we will see you again!

His wit and his constant ability to keep all of us up to date with the happenings of Mooseheart were amazing. We loved James and miss him dearly.
