Very sorry to hear the news of Fr. Flanagan’s passing. I have fond memories of him at Sacred Heart School in South Plainfield. He was very strict but also very funny. Fr. Flanagan and Fr. Tom were always a wonderful team working with us as kids. I truly miss them both in our parish. My prayers go out to Fr. Flanagan and his family during this very difficult time.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Father Ed. I was the organist at Sacred Hear Church (South Plainfield) when he arrived as the new assistant pastor. It did not take very long for me to realize what a wonderful person he was. His marvelous sense of humor and the depth of his spirituality that always came through in his homilies was truly a wonderful experience for me.
We laughed a lot and we had our sad moments too. When his father died I was asked to go down to the Shore to play the organ for his funeral Mass. There are so many other memories that fit between the many laughs and some tears, too many to share.
When all is said and done I know that he reached many people throughout his priestly ministry. He is our loss but his gain as he entered into his heavenly reward on November 8, 2020. May he rest in peace and may he enjoy his heavenly reward for all eternity.

I knew Fr. Ed only casually, as a mutual friend and classmate of Fr. Adolph Kowalczyk and Fr. Paul Seil. Ed was a person of tremendous faith, with quick wit and a smile that would light of a room. He was a passionate priest, one who loved his parishioners and cared deeply for his flock. Fr. Ed's cancer diagnosis was indeed sad news but his resolute demeanor and fighting spirit bid him to bear the battle bravely. He was an inspiration to all who suffer from this terrible disease. He spent many summers visiting Buffalo and his two classmates, Addie and Paul. They loved good food, nice wine, and travel. Fr. Ed regaled many of us with funny stories, almost always with a profound message.
Fr. Ed was a gifted homilist and humble soul. He will be missed by all his friends and family, gone to soon, I'm afraid. But, I know, our loss is heavens gain. St. Edward of Metuchen pray for us. Fr. Ed, brother friend and priest, rest in peace!

I was privileged to have been Eddies' second grade teacher. I have known him all these years. He has always been a quiet, peaceful, loving and grateful soul. How wonderful that he is enjoying the Lord and Heaven already. I feel certain that he will continue to pray for all of us who admired him and who are grateful for his inspiration, Sister Joanne

Our deepest sympathy to Fr. Ed’s family and to all his parish family. My family and I were blessed to be part of his parish family for many years. We moved to North Carolina six years ago but, we still considered Fr. Ed our pastor. We looked forward to seeing him and Sister Colette each time we visited NJ. In October 2019, in between his own doctor visits and medical testing, he took the time to visit my mother, who was on hospice, at her home. The three of us talked, held hands and prayed. In those moments, we felt comfort and peace with what lied ahead. I will never forget his kindness to my mother that day. But, that is who Fr. Ed was. A man of faith with great devotion to others, even while enduring his own trials. My family and I will always look back on our time spent with Fr. Ed with fondness and we are grateful for having known him, for having learned how to live our faith through his example. Fr. Ed was one of a kind. He will be deeply missed.

My sincerest condolences go out to Fr Flanagan’s family and all the sheep he shepherd at Nativity. I went on a pilgrimage to Ireland a few years ago and I will NEVER forget the love and wisdom he shared with all those who went. I can still feel the excitement of Fr saying mass in one of the churches ,in Ireland , early in the morning we opened the church. I will continue to pray for Fr’s soul as he taught us to do and may the perpetual light shine on him and may he (finally) Rest In Peace amen Sincerely , Liz Burns

Words cannot describe what I am feeling right now. I wish to express my sincere condolences to the entire Flanagan family and to Ed's Nativity family. I have known Fr. Ed and we have been best friends since kindergarten. (And yes we even called him Fr. Ed then. His vocation was that strong at that early age. He always wanted to be a priest. We became altar boys together, went to a seminary weekend together to explore possible Franciscan vocations, and attended school together all through and including high school. So many great memories shared with him will never be forgotten, whether it was at school or when we went to each others houses. I remember his first mass and how happy he was! Over the years, while we could not remain as close as we had been growing up, we were always in contact with each other, sharing our life's successes and challenges. Ed faced this illness bravely and without complaint. This was due to his great faith in God. Seeing him go through this and walking with him along part of the way, his attitude reminded me of the man I want to be. Ed's example and spirit will never be gone or forgotten. His spirit, life and strong Faith and Catholic teaching will continue to be reflected in all of us he came into contact with. God bless you my friend! I know you are in heaven with the Lord! We love you!
