Obituary of Joseph C. Sangiovanni

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joseph Cono Sangiovanni, 83, of Monroe Township died Aug. 9, 2020, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Born Aug. 11, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of James and Teresa (Simonetti) Sangiovanni. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan (Malvasso) Sangiovanni; son, Michael Sangiovanni and his partner, Nick Petruncio, of Red Bank; daughter, Amy Bellomo and her husband, Giacomo Bellomo, of Whippany, their children, Mia and Gianna; and his brother, Vincent, of Connecticut. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Dolores; and his brothers, John and Michael.

Joe graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. Following his military service, he worked as an electrical draftsman in addition to holding many occupations during his lifetime as he devotedly provided for his family.

When Joe wasn’t at one of his many jobs, he enjoyed sports, photography, music, gardening, home and family.

His love of sports followed him through life, being a loyal fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Mets and Rutgers football.

Joe liked taking photographs and movies at family events and has left an abundance of memories for his appreciative family. However, he seemed to find the most joy in front of the camera, especially when the music started. He could be happy dancingwith his wife at a wedding or with a performer on the streets of Manhattan. He also loved to sing - anything from Perry Como to the Beatles, with Frank Sinatra being a clear favorite - and was quite the crooner, especially when his wife Joan fed him the lyrics.

Joe always enjoyed a day at the beach or a drive down the shore. His favorite place, though, was in the comfort of his home and garden, growing peppers, broccoli, corn, “googootz” (Italian slang for “zucchini”), and enough tomatoes to feed the neighborhood.

Proud of his Brooklyn roots, Joe loved to reminisce about his childhood memories like the summers at Coney Island, his days as an altar boy, or the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He loved to talk about politics, health, and almost anything with anyone he met. It was not unusual to lose Joe in a crowd because he had made a new friend. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather.

A private burial will be held at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, with a celebration of life ceremony to take place at a later time.  Full arrangements are under the direction of the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. - 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ  08831.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Liver Association or the American Heart Association.
