Obituary of Edward M Johnsen

Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edward M. Johnsen, son of Mary (Larsen) and Oscar Johnsen died on April 5th, 2020 peacefully at his home in Monroe Township, N.J. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 15th, 1924- the youngest of 4 children.  Having grown up through depression, Edward developed a strong work ethic at a very young age, one he carried on through life. A veteran of the United States Army, he served for 3 years during World War II in the European Theatre reaching the rank of Sergeant Major. After serving his country, he continued his civil service as he joined the New York City Police Department. At the same time, he also met the love of his life, Ann Nardi at a dance in Brooklyn in 1946. Ed and Ann married in 1948 and raised their 3 children in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn enjoying raising them near family and city life. He retired after 22 years of service from the NYPD at the rank of Sergeant. He transitioned to his second career as a Trial Preparation Investigator for U.S. Fidelity and Guarantee Company in New York City where he worked 23 years. In 1989, he and Ann decided to leave Brooklyn and head for the suburbs of Monroe Township settling in their beloved community of Rossmoor. They enjoyed many happy years there socializing, playing cards, competing in shuffleboard and joining many of the activities the community offered. They were active members of the Italian American Club where Ed served as President for a term. After Ann’s passing in 2010, he continued his activities and learned to play bridge and later became a regular player at the Milltown Library. He always enjoyed passing time socializing and sharing laughs over group games with his family and friends.

Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who led by example of love, honesty and generosity. He had passion for living each day to the fullest and was always ready for a party with family and friends. He was thoughtful, kind and ever loving and truly made others better people for having known him- truly one of a kind. His best times were spent with his family sharing a schnapps and a beer and playing Rummikub, a family favorite.

Edward was predeceased by his wife Ann (Nardi) his sisters Mildred and Muriel, his brother Norman and son in law, Kurt Steinhauer. He is survived by his children Karen White and husband Jon of East Brunswick, New Jersey, Lori Steinhauer of Fairfield, Connecticut and Kenneth Johnsen and his wife Mary Beth of Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey. He was beloved grandfather to 9 grandchildren, Christopher Steinhauer, Brian (Elizabeth) Steinhauer , Michael (Janine) Johnsen , Thomas (Emily) Steinhauer, Kimberly ( Andrew) LaDuca, Timothy White, Daniel (Joseph) Johnsen, Jillian Steinhauer and Melanie Johnsen. He also was blessed with 9 great-grandchildren Isabelle and Ava Steinhauer, Ryan and Nora Johnsen, Patrick White, Kurt and Riley Steinhauer, Nate and Mason Steinhauer and Baby LaDuca arriving in June. He was beloved Uncle to Paul and Beth Johnsen, Thomas Mullenbach and Claudia Mastrapasqua. We extend special thanks to Dr. Theresa Schaer his beloved physician and Elaine Rusche, Ed’s dedicated caretaker for their devoted service.

Out of respect and concern for public health and safety, funeral services are being held privately at the convenience of the family and will be followed by a Celebration of Life memorial service at a later date.
