Gary J. Hurley
1/25/1957 – 8/2/2019
Gary J. Hurley, age 62, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on the evening of Friday, August 2nd, 2019 following complications from a stroke suffered the week prior. His loss is one that will be felt by all who had the good fortune to know him.
Gary was born in Annapolis, MD in 1957 and raised in Edison, NJ for the entirety of his youth. He was a proud attendee of J.P. Stevens High School before simultaneously pursuing a collegiate football career and business degree at Southern Connecticut University. As was the case throughout Gary’s life, he was successful at both.
As the first-born son of a military family, Gary was imbued with a sense of responsibility and work ethic that would carry through his adult life and professional career. His parents, John and Nancy Hurley, would both have the opportunity to see their son succeed in multiple avenues, both personal and professional, before their passing. Gary is survived by his sister, Patricia, his brother-in-law, Jeff and his nephew, Ryan.
Gary’s personal life was blessed by his marriage to Margaret, his high school sweetheart and wife of 39 years. In addition, his legacy will be carried on by his children, Brian and Erin, as well as his son-in-law Troy, and his three grandchildren, Michael, Eva and Gwen. Gary was a beloved husband, extraordinary father, and incredible grandfather to his family.
His professional life included 30+ years in the shipping industry, with more than 20 years as a dedicated Sales Executive for NYK Line. Gary thoroughly loved and appreciated his time with NYK, including the close bond with his colleagues and the opportunity to travel the world. He was a company man through and through.
Among his many interests, Gary enjoyed golf, travel, and entertaining friends and family most of all. His ability to put people at ease served him well as he made friends across the world. Gary was remarkable in his aptitude to positively impact everyone he came into contact with. To know him was to love him. He will be deeply missed.
