Obituary of Mildred L. Luckhardt, PhD

Mildred (Cook) Luckhardt, Ph.D. age 92, died October 10, 2011 in Monroe Township, New Jersey. Born Mildred Lorraine Cook on August 3, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was an educator, loving mother and author. Mildred graduated in 1941 as what was then called a "Maggie-Murph" from Carnegie-Mellon University as a home economics major. She later taught in the Pittsburgh Public Schools rising to Supervisor of Home Economics. While in the Pittsburgh schools she wrote "Everybody Guesses" as a part of the popular home economics series for students. After earning her Master's degree at Carnegie-Mellon, and then her doctorate in Education (Psychology) at the University of Pittsburgh she became a college professor and then Department Chair of Home Economics at Manchester College in Indiana, West Virginia University, and then at Texas A & M at Commerce, Texas.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Joan Luckhardt and Robert Tucker of Dayton, New Jersey; John and Barbara Luckhardt of McMurray, Pennsylvania; Louis and Karen Luckhardt of Enis, Texas; and, William Wade and Ruby Luckhardt of Walnut Creek, California as well as grandchildren Allyson Luckhardt Eckenrode, Matt Luckhardt, Jessica Luckhardt, Bradley Luckhardt, Alexander Luckhardt, and step-grandchildren Lee Terriault, Katy Tucker, Danny Djukovic and Gordana Dukovic and great-grandchildren Mattie and Reece Luckhardt Eckenrode and step-great-grandchildren Eli and Zoe Tucker-Borrut; and her nephew Roy Cook and niece Susan Cook and their children.
A private cremation took place under the direction of the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Monroe Twp., NJ, (732) 521-0555.
A celebration of Mildred Cook Luckhardt's life will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 with the service starting at 3 p.m. It will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Road, Princeton, NJ 08540-7626, 609-924-1604.
