Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George M. Wallhauser, Jr., 84, died August 7 at his home at Rossmoor, Monroe Township, N.J. Mr. Wallhauser had been active in Republican politics in North Jersey, serving as Essex County Republican chairman and as a candidate for Congress in 1970 in the 11th Congressional District. He served as a member of the New Jersey Public Utilities Commission and was insurance consultant for the North Jersey Water Supply Commission. Mr. Wallhauser was chairman of East Orange General Hospital, a post he held for 17 years. He was a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He had a distinguished insurance career that included early positions with Aetna Life Insurance Co. In 1960, as a General Agent for Aetna, he successfully established an Agency in America's (new) 50th State, Hawaii and later ran the Grand Pacific Insurance Co. of Hawaii. He was a general agent for New England Mutual Life, and was an active longtime independent agent before his retirement.
Mr. Wallhauser was born in Newark, lived with his parents in East Orange until he was three, and grew up in Maplewood, where he graduated from Columbia High School. After returning stateside from Hawaii, he and his family lived for many years in South Orange. He also maintained a summer home at Greenwood Lake in Passaic County where he often gathered family and friends and enjoyed boating, swimming and fishing. He often said his lake home, situated on an island, was his best and only hobby. Mr. Wallhauser was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Aleutian Islands. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, and although he had broad tastes in music, his odds-on favorite listening was the singing of Bing Crosby.
Mr. Wallhauser was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Wallhauser. His father served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1959-1965.
He is survived by sons Mark A. of Fair Haven, N.J., and Jonathan D. of Satellite Beach, FL; a daughter, Mary Hopkins of Seabrook Island, S.C.; a brother, Henry T. of Millburn; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St Andrews Holy Communion Church, 160 West South Orange Avenue, South Orange, New Jersey, on Friday August 19 at 11am.
