Obituary of Anthony Xerri

Anthony Xerri passed away on January 3rd, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at the age of 96. Mr. Xerri was born on February 17, 1921 on the island of Gozo, Malta where he spent his childhood. Mr. Xerri served in The Malta Armed Forces where he manned searchlights during World War II as Malta played a key role in defeating the Axis alliance. Mr. Xerri emigrated from Malta to the United States in 1951 and spent most of his life in Brooklyn before moving to Monroe Township, N.J. in 2010. Mr. Xerri worked at Zampieri Brothers Bakery in Greenwich Village for 17 years before retirement. He always liked going fishing and following the stock market.
Anthony was preceded in death by two brothers, Emanuel Xerri and Frank Xerri and two sisters, Mary Rose Buttigieg and Carmela Tabone.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Josephine (Debrincat) Xerri, two sons, Ray and his wife Holly of Oceanside, N.Y. and Joseph and his wife Connie of Freehold Township, N.J. , one brother, Larry and his wife Michelle of Riverhead, N.Y., one sister, Connie Grima of Brooklyn, N.Y. and four grandchildren, Anthony J., Joanna T., Alexa N., and Jacqueline S. and many extended family members around the world.
Visitation will be 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Friday January 5, 2018 and 10am-11am on Saturday January 6, 2018 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. - 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ 08831 - 732-521-0555. A catholic blessing will be 11am on Saturday January 6, 2017 at the funeral home followed by entombment in Holy Cross Burial Park Mausoleum - South Brunswick. Please be advised that committal services at the cemetery will take place indoors, out of the extreme weather.
