Josephine (Hernandez) Mendez passed away on Wednesday January 3, 2018 at Centra-State Medical Center in Freehold. She was 81 years old. Mrs. Mendez was born and raised in Moca, Puerto Rico. She came to the US in 1945 and settled in Brooklyn where she lived until moving to Greenbriar @ Whittingham in Monroe Twp. in 1993. Most recently she resided in Millstone Twp. She was an elementary school teacher for PS 140 in Brooklyn until her retirement in 1992. She was a former member and captain of her bocce team in Greenbriar @ Whittingham. She loved travelling, playing cards, and dominoes.
She was predeceased by her husband Ernesto in 2012, and eleven siblings.
She is survived by three children, Nancy A. Doremus and her husband Douglas of Breezy Point, NY, Hector Mendez and his wife Claire of Millstone Twp., and Lorraine M. Davila and her husband Jaime of West Windsor Twp., six grandchildren, Matthew Doremus, Jason Davila and his wife Jenna, Christina Mendez, Marissa Davila, Elizabeth Mendez, and Michael Davila, one great granddaughter, Madison Doremus, and many other extended family members.
Visitation will be 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Friday January 5, 2018 and from 8:30am to 9:00am on Saturday January 6, 2018 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home 205 Rhode Hall Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831, 732-521-0555. Funeral services will begin at 9:00am on Saturday from the funeral home. A funeral liturgy will 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church - 91 Stillhouse Rd., Millstone Twp., NJ 08510 followed by entombment in Holy Cross Burial Park Mausoleum, S. Brunswick.
