Obituary of David J. Shanks

David J. Shanks died on Thursday July 23, 2015 surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 88 years old. Mr. Shanks was born and raised in Newark. He later lived in Jamesburg and Bloomfield before moving to Rossmoor, Monroe Twp. in 2009. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was an electrician and worked for the NJ State Home for Boys, Jamesburg Hardware Store, and the Veterans Administration in East Orange. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Jamesburg Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, travelling, collecting stamps and antique radios, and reading. He also was a licensed ham radio operator. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Milsia (Block) Shanks, his brother, Edmund Shanks, and his dear friend, Janice Dwyer. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Makris and her husband Perry of Monroe Twp., his son, Douglas Shanks of Rossmoor, Monroe Twp., two sisters, Mildred Garrigan of Point Pleasant, and Florence Romanski of Whiting, two granddaughters, Stephanie Makris of Brooklyn, and Kristen Spahn and her husband Joseph of Monroe Twp., 11 nieces and nephews, and many other extended family members. Visitation will be 9am to 11am on Wednesday July 29, 2015 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home 205 Rhode Hall Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831, 732-521-0555. A funeral service will begin at 11:00am at the conclusion of the visiting hours. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, NJ. In lieu of flowers and for those who desire, memorial contributions may be made payable to David Shanks, Donation Account, by Donna Makris Custodian. This donation account has been set up to form a scholarship for students pursuing degrees in the fields of Arts and Nursing.
