Charles Allan Phillip, Sr., 63, died on July 7, 2015 at St. Peter's University Medical Center in New Brunswick. Charles was born in New Brunswick and lived in Edison for 22 years before moving to Jamesburg 42 years ago. He was a 1970 graduate of Edison High School. He then started a career in custodial services, working for several Middlesex County school districts and healthcare facilities, including Jamesburg Public Schools and finally serving as custodial supervisor at Franklin Twp. public schools for 10 years, retiring in 2006. Al joined the Boy Scouts in his youth at Thomas Edison Council, Edison, NJ and achieved the rank of Life Scout. He has been involved for more than 50 years. As an adult, he was a Cubmaster and Den leader for Pack 105 and 5 of the 7 boys from his Den made Eagle, several of those boys earning multiple Palms. This was an achievement he often mentioned and was proud of. He also volunteered with Troop 54 of Jamesburg where his Son Charles, Jr. achieved the rank of Life Scout and eventually Al also became Scout Master of Troop 60, Monroe Twp. were his son Robert Sr. earned his Eagle. He was a leader in Troop 60 from 1990 until his death. He mentored approximately 20 Eagle Scouts and obtained his Wood Badge in 1994 as a member of the Crow Patrol of Troop 1. Charles received the Scout Master's Key, Scoutmaster Award of Merit and Unit Award of Merit in 2010 and was a member of the Snuffy Hollow Camporee Committee. He hosted the "Fun Station" for the past 7 years. In his leisure time and retirement years he enjoyed salt water fishing at the family summer home in Tuckerton and spending time with his grandchildren and family. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Janet R. (Turoski) Phillip, two sons: Charles, Jr. and his wife Lauren of Bellville, IL and Robert, Sr. and his wife Sarah of Riverview, FL, two daughters: Catherine Trent and her husband Kevin of Fairfax, VA and Carolyn Phillip of Centreville, VA, one sister F. Jane Berger of Toms River and eight grandchildren: Elizabeth, Alexander, Danielle, Robert, Jr., Victoria, Noa Jane, Ethan and Charles III. Visitation will be 2-6pm on Sunday July 12, 2015 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. – 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ 08831 – 732-521-0555. A funeral service will be 12pm on Monday July 13, 2015 at the funeral home followed by interment in Spotswood Reform Church Cemetery – Spotswood. In lieu of flowers and for those who desire memorial contributions may be made to Scott Williams – 14 Larkspur Dr., Dayton, NJ 08810. Please indicate in the memo of the check "In memory of Al Phillip for the Snuffy Hollow Fun Station".
