Obituary of Anthony J. Salerno

Anthony Salerno died on January 6, 2015 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 80 years old. Anthony, better known as Tony, was born and raised in New Brunswick where he lived for most of his life before moving to Encore in Monroe Twp. in 2005. After graduating from New Brunswick High School in 1934 Tony attended St. Charles Seminary for 4 ½ years before joining the Army. He then went on to work with Liberty Mutual and O'Connell & Salisbury insurance companies before establishing his own business in 1984, Salerno & Son, specializing in assisting other companies establish self-insured Worker's Compensation Programs. Very active in his community, Tony had served as President of the North Brunswick Jaycees, President of the New Brunswick Kiwanis, Treasurer of the Visiting Homemaker Service of Middlesex County, sat on the Retired Senior Volunteer Advisory Council, was affiliated with the Mack E. Williams Memorial Foundation and was past Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Tony received the "Others Award" from The Salvation Army, the highest award given to an individual for his humanitarian services to others. His humanitarian efforts did not stop there. Tony was known as the "Candyman" for his visitations to area nursing homes where he went out distributing candy to seniors and bringing a smile to those in need. Tony was a parishioner of St. James the Less RC Church in Jamesburg.
Tony was preceded in death by his sister Ina Garwood (2008).
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Susan (Van Wickle) Salerno, three sons: Mark Salerno and his wife Anne-Marie of Ewing, Michael Salerno of North Brunswick and Vincent Salerno and his wife Amy of Coconut Creek, FL, two daughters: Laura Kalck and her husband Richard of East Brunswick and Maria Grizzaffi and her husband Michael of Colts Neck, seven grandchildren: Ashley, Jordan and Noelle Kalck, Tia Lechorchick, and Angela, Christina and Sara Rose Grizzaffi and one great-grandchild: Rylan Lechorchick.
Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Thursday January 8, 2015 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. – 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ 08831 – 732-521-0555. Funeral services will begin at 9:15am on Friday January 9, 2015 from the funeral home. A funeral liturgy will be at 10am on Friday at St. James the Less RC Church – Jamesburg. Interment is private.
