Michael Halasnik, 91, died peacefully on Sunday November 16, 2014 at his home in Monroe Twp., NJ with his family by his side. A loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, Michael was born in Carteret and resided in Watchung for most of his life before moving to Monroe Township eight years ago.
Michael proudly served his country in the United Sates Navy during World War II. He was employed as a purchasing manager at GATX in Carteret for thirty five years retiring in 1986. Michael was the founder of Michael Halasnik and His Orchestra and played the saxophone and clarinet. For thirty five years, Michael and his band performed at weddings and parties all over New Jersey and New York. He was also an active parishioner of Nativity of Our Lord RC Church.
An avid sports fan, Michael was partial to the Boston sports teams even though he lived in NJ his entire life. He had the opportunity to visit Fenway Park for the first time on his 84th birthday where his name was displayed on the scoreboard welcoming him to the ball field.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of fifty seven years, Dorothy (Idec) Halasnik, two daughters: Michele Mueller and her husband Jeffrey of Millstone Twp. NJ, Denise Haines and her husband John also of Millstone Twp. NJ, one son, Stephen Halasnik and his wife Gina of Kinnelon, NJ, one sister, Ann Heil and her husband George of Lakehurst, NJ, one brother, Peter Halasnik of Linden, NJ, and eight grandchildren: Kristen, Katie, Matthew, Jessica, Paul, Jennifer, Michael and Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Friday November 21, 2014 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home – 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ 08831 – 732-521-0555. Funeral services will begin at 8:45am on Saturday November 22, 2014 at the funeral home. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 9:30am at Nativity of Our Lord RC Church – 185 Applegarth Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ 08831. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude's Cemetery - 53 Inman Avenue Colonia, NJ.
