Obituary of Cynthia M. "Cyndy" Harkins

Cynthia (Cyndy) (nee DeRenzi) Harkins 57 of Monroe Twp., NJ a retired Workers Compensation Senior Claims Adjuster, who was devoted to her family and will be greatly missed, died Thursday September 4, 2014 at her home while in Hospice Care after a stay at RWJ University Hospital and JFK Medical Center after suffering two strokes. Born Cynthia DeRenzi in Staten Island, she lived in West Brighton, Stapleton, and later settled in Elm Park after marrying her husband Edward Harkins. The couple moved to NJ in 2005. She was a graduate of Curtis High School and had attended Staten Island Community College. Mrs. Harkins worked for the US Postal Service in the Manor Rd. Postmasters Office in the 1970's & 80's. She was known as Santa Cyndy, after a 1982 Advance article showing her answering hundreds of children's letters to Santa, she also coached at W.S.L.L. in the 1990's and opened a Ceramic business known as Personal Touch Ceramics while working a full time job as a worker's compensation adjuster at various insurance companies. Cyndy was a Big NY Yankees fan and didn't miss a game on TV, she also enjoyed watching golf and game shows and going to casinos in Atlantic City and Pennsylvania. While living in Stated Island, she was a parishioner of St. Roch's RC Church, and after settling three years ago in Monroe Twp., she attended Nativity of Our Lord RC Church. Surviving along with Edward, her husband of 32 years, are her son, Michael Caputo, her step-daughter, Jennifer Harkins, her brothers, Dominic & Anthony DeRenzi, and her sister, Patricia McCabe. A funeral liturgy will be 10:30am on Saturday September 6, 2014 at Nativity of Our Lord RC Church 185 Applegarth Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831. Committal and Cremation will follow Mass at Holy Cross Burial Park Crematory, S. Brunswick. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home – 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Twp., NJ 08831 – 732-521-0555.
