Dear Janice,

I just heard and I am very saddened and sorry. I always thought about him and considered him one of my mentors although he gave me the business on more than 1 occasion. I will never forget the first grant I wrote; I brought it up to him as he had to sign it. He asked me if it was the best I could do. I told him I thought so; he handed it back to me without looking at it and said: " bring it back when it is the best you can do". I have told that story many times over the years!
My thoughts are with you...he was a swell guy.

I just heard about Harvey's death yesterday. He and I worked together for a number of years at Lutheran Medical Center. Harvey was one of the smartest, most humorous and most forthright people with whom I have ever worked. Early in my career, we had one very cathartic moment that I will never forget. It started out as a very difficult meeting (for me at least) and ended with me having a life-long deep respect for Harvey and if words, actions and demeanor mean anything, I think that respect was always returned in kind. He was a special guy and I am so sorry to hear about his death.

Janice,
Your husband was so much more than Mr. Holzberg to my son Joey and I. He was the man, along with Jack Sinagra, who saved my sons life by collecting him and his records from another facility where he was dying and bringing him to RWJU. Because of Harvey, I had 8 more wonderful years with my son. And Harvey didn't stop there. Joey loved working at RWJU. He teased Harvey calling him "Uncle Harvey" when he saw him in the corridors, and Harvey would smile back and say, "Hey Joe, how's mom?" Harvey was kind. He was very humble and very human. He knew everyone's name and treated everyone with kindness and respect. He was jovial, and times quite the jokester. Most importantly, Harvey was a real man, a man of integrity.
My deepest, deepest sympathy.

My condolences to Mrs. Holzberg and the entire family. I first met Harvey when he became the President and CEO of Jersey City Medical Center. The hospital was in bankruptcy and Harvey used his strong leadership skills to turn it around in a matter of years. Harvey taught me many things during the time we worked together, and I really liked him. He was a great communicator and listener; strong willed yet willing to compromise; sometimes a little hot-headed but always maintained his great sense of humor; and possessed a commitment and drive to do what was right. Harvey was truly a good man and he will be missed! Rest in peace!

I'm very sorry to learn of Harvey's passing. He was a true mentor and friend. He brought me from Pittsburgh to intern at the Jersey City Medical Center, got me my first job at United Hospitals in Newark, NJ, and my next one at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Very generous. Always willing to hear how I was doing, no matter how busy he was. Many fond memories of Harvey's sense of humor. I will miss him. My condolences to the Holzberg family.
