William F. Oakes, Jr. – Columbus, NJ William F. Oakes, Jr., 82, died peacefully at his residence on Friday August 3, 2012. William was born and raised in Staten Island, NY and resided there for most of his life before moving to Columbus, NJ in 1996. William proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was employed by the New York City Police Department for 26 years. William retired in 1979 as a Sergeant. He enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, as well as travelling. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family. William is predeceased by two sisters: Genevieve Hemmes and Grace Hambly. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Shirley (Rice) Oakes, a son William F. and his wife Susan of San Jose, CA. two daughters: Shirley Kadin and her husband Andrew of Spring, TX, and Mary Gran and her husband Phil of Monroe Twp., NJ., eight grandchildren: Claire Hanada and her husband Dereck, Laura Oakes, Janine Kadin, Michelle Kadin, Peter Kadin, Brendan Gran, Allison Gran, and Timothy Gran, and two great grandchildren: Colten and Gemma Hanada. Also surviving are two sisters: Dorothy DeSio of Spotswood, NJ and Eleanor Keeley of Staten Island, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will begin at 8:30pm on Monday August 6th at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home – 205 Rhode Hall Rd. – Monroe Twp. Visitation will be 2-4 & 7pm until the start of the service.
