Obituary of David L. Hawke

David L. Hawke died on Tuesday December 6, 2011 at his home in Rossmoor, Monroe Twp. He was 88 years old. Mr. Hawke was born and raised in Tottenville, SI, NY. He moved to Metuchen in 1956 where he was active in Little League and Junior League Baseball programs and in the Metuchen Tennis Association. He has resided in the Rossmoor, Monroe Twp. community since 1996 where he was a member of the Rossmoor Men's Golf Club, the Bocce Club, and the Rossmoor Writers Group. He was co-editor of the magazine THE ROSSMOOR FOX, and in 2001, he edited and published an anthology of the Group's works under the title THE ROSSMOOR FOX. Mr. Hawke, an Engineering Materials Specialist, worked 38 years with NL Industries selecting materials of construction for chemical and metallurgical plants. Following retirement from NL, he worked as a technical consultant to producers of magnesium metal, most recently, Norsk Hydro Magnesium Division. He was the author of several technical papers on the use of magnesium die-castings for weight reduction in automotive applications. He was a cum laude graduate of Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the US Army in Europe during WWII, earning a Central Europe Campaign Ribbon.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen (Mester) Hawke of Rossmoor, Monroe Twp., his son, David G. Hawke, his daughter, Patricia H. Schwarz, and two grandsons, Ryan A. Hawke and Dane F. Schwarz. He is also survived by his sister, Jean H. Gierman, one niece, Barbara Aulicino, her husband Bill, and two nephews, Richard and Paul Gierman, his wife Roe and their two children Melonie and Paul.
A private cremation was held under the direction of the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. 205 Rhode Hall Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831, 732-521-0555. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on January 5, 2012 at the Rossmoor Community Church, Monroe Twp.
