Obituary of Martin M. Gurvitch

Please share a memory of Martin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Martin (Marty) Gurvitch passed from this life on May 23rd, 2019 in Princeton, weeks after celebrating his 89th birthday. Marty was kind, gentle, and had a genuine giving heart. Marty was deeply devoted to his wife Betty Gurvitch and daughter Ilaine Gurvitch (each predeceased him), and to his son Adam Gurvitch, daughter-in-law Andrea Dezso, grandson Mark Bosz, brother-in-law Robert Ginsberg, and to his other loving family and friends, including Susumu and Kokoro Kato.

Marty was born in Newark, NJ, where he helped his family survive the Depression by helping his father make pre-dawn bread deliveries. He studied science at Newark College of Engineering and enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After completing his service, Marty attended the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor with the GI Bill, earning a masters degree in chemical engineering. Early in his career Marty turned down work producing chemical weapons, and chose to work as a research chemist for FMC Corp., where he led a 35-year distinguished career including working as an environmental manager in Princeton.

Marty and Betty were married for 53 years and together shared a deep love of music and nature, travel and discovery. In his 8th decade Marty snorkeled for the first time, traveled to Japan and Italy with his grandson Mark – with whom he shared a joyous relationship, and took up carving masterly detailed wood bird sculptures. Marty volunteered actively. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the nonprofit Center for the Independence of the Disabled, NY (https://www.cidny.org/donation/).
